I [for] EYE

INSTALLATION BY STEFAAN DECOSTERE

I FOR EYE echoes the impressive architectural ‘telescope’ on top of the TUD central library building, with a view not larger than the human eye. The giant cosmic and sky view is rescaled here to that of the human individual sensitive body. The expectation, however, is as ambitious as its model.

I FOR EYE is an homage to Brunelleschi’s ‘tavoletta’ and his double mirror-based set-up from the 1420’s (with which he put his eye on perspective drawing). It reminds us of the love story encoded in Marcel Duchamp’s installation ‘Etant Donné’. It can be understood as a 3D-storyboard view waiting to be set in motion in a moving picture. In that sense, I for Eye announces the fantastic story of Alice, who, in this very library, falls in love with a boy, precisely at the moment when she is cured from a long term eye sickness. The emotion enflames in her eye, as an image that reflects throughout her whole body. Here, she is just about to leave the space, ready to take a ride, away from an optics of lust to the magic of love. (script for single screen, in-progress by Stefaan Decostere).

I FOR EYE displays a situation of mirrors and reflections, hidden behind small peeping holes. The mirroring mirrors inside activate the original power of media, capable of transforming reality into something else.

The Uppermost Branches

Due to the complexity of the design, it was decided that a video featurette including animations and sounds would best explain the design. Included will be a rough schematic drawings and I will provide running commentary. The video limit is 5mins, but considering the amount of time it takes to generate an animation, it’s unlikely to be that long.

I have already made recordings of the shop where I bought my plant, as well as the sound of waterfowl.

There will be three key animation sequences:

1. The Approach from 6m-1m distance. (360 frames)

2. The Script which entices the viewer to venture even closer. (360 frames)

3. Enlightenment, which explains what happens what the ‘veil’ is parted. (100frames)

As of writing this, the video/animation/sound compiling is complete. My first time using Adobe Pemiere and my brain was bit fuzzy after only 2 hours sleep the night before (babysitting the batch rendering in Maya), but it’s done; clocking in at just over 2 minutes.

The overall illusion is exactly as I anticipated.

Unfortunately the high-res file has some problems (staggering video, sound cutting off, missing frames) so ill need to copy the low-res version from the school hard drive tomorrow morning. Also I was amazed at how wobbly my camera skills are, maybe I should work for the guys who made Battlestar Galactica!

Behind the Foliage

So, now we have our design concept – a floating box that attracts the curiosity of the shoppers.

But now what? They can almost see the plant inside, but will they engage? Do they dare even touch the ‘box’?

What is needed is a final factor, something that makes them part the viel and complete the ‘script’.

Perhaps the object spins slowly, unnoticeable at a distance, but apparent up close; after all the beauty of nature is its 3-dimensionality.

Even more effective might be a slight noise from within the ‘box’. Originally I thought of a cricket, but some people are revolted by insects, so the cheeping of a baby bird would be more enticing. This idea was inspired in part my Magrite’s peanut box, but the effect of opening will be the opposite.

When the surrounding tubes are moved the noise stops and a light above turns on, signifying life through intervention. This metaphor may need to be strengthened somewhat.

Hoe kan het winkelend publiek een spoor achterlaten of een boodschap ontvangen? Dat was de hoofd vraag die ik mezelf heb gesteld.

Allereerst ben ik gaan zoeken naar voorbeelden/referenties van ’kunst’ door middel van plastic bekertjes:

Wat opvalt is dat het plastic bekertje bijna onherkenbaar is gebruikt. Door de grote hoeveelheid bekertjes valt het object als individu niet meer op in het geheel. Een mooi uitgangspunt om eventueel verder op door te kunnen gaan.

De drang om in het bekertje te willen knijpen en het terug te duwen in de oorspronkelijke vorm blijft trekken: een risico factor > het materiaal is kwetsbaar en scheurt snel. Hoe kan er worden ingespeeld op dit risico?

Hoe kan het bekertje worden gebruikt om een spoor achter te laten? Of uitnodigen om deel te nemen aan een soort activiteit? Hoe kan een boodschap worden overgebracht aan het winkelend publiek? Hoe kan het bekertje daarbij een rol spelen?

Vele nog onbeantwoorde vragen!

Hieronder een aantal concept schetsen van ideeen die opkwamen na de vele vragen:

Een simpel maar toch bruikbaar idee is het gebruik van plastic bekertjes om een boodschap achter te laten, door deze in een hekwerk te duwen. Patronen zijn mogelijk om te maken, maar ook woorden kunnen worden gevormd. Iedereen kan er aan mee doen. En zo een boodschap achter laten aan winkelend publiek:

Dit idee zie ik niet zozeer als een box in een winkel staan. Maar eerder op een winkelplein of in een winkelstraat. Als onderdeel van het straatleven. Het doet denken aan graffiti spuiten.

Het idee zal verder uitgewerkt moeten worden om te kijken wat de mogelijkheden zijn en hoe kan worden omgegaan met de risicofactor.

Exterieur

Zojuist dacht ik na over hoe mensen gestimuleerd kunnen worden daadwerkelijk in de doos te kijken. Binnenin speelt zich het hele spektakel af, maar van buitenaf kun je daar niets van zien. De hoek waarmee je in de box kijkt, is immers erg belangrijk en dus zal iemand echt door de kijkgaten moeten kijken. Vanuit de spiegelillusie aan de binnenkant, kwam ik op een nieuwe spiegelillusie aan de buitenkant. Deze is veel bekender, doch trekt wel altijd de aandacht, omdat hij een bijzondere vervorming geeft. Hieronder staat hij afgebeeld.
